Pomona College was established as "a college of the New England type" for the West Coast in 1887. In the mid-1920s, the College had to decide whether to keep itself a small college or expand into a large university. Instead, Pomona helped create The Claremont Colleges consortium, of which Claremont McKenna College (#24) is also a member.
